Contemporary PAINTINGs DEFINING PLACE, light, and space with electric AND DARING colors.

As a child, I celebrated coloring outside the lines.

This early expression of freedom evolved into the gestural painting style that defines my work today.

UPHOLDING HERITAGE

Born into a long line of artists, designers, and architects, my paintings fuse the structural sensibilities of my architect father and the often riotous color sense of my interior designer mother.

I studied painting at Trinity College with colorist George Chapman, a student of Joseph Albers. I learned the art of defining space with color and value.

After 30 years of success in the graphic design field, I decided to get a real job and become a painter.

MY Artistic Creed: The Invented Color Space

In my hands, each piece becomes a world of ‘invented color space’ where abstract landscapes and architectural interiors come alive. My work invites you to journey through compositions where color fractures and reforms, creating depth and atmosphere open to personal interpretation.

My art focuses on abstract landscapes and architectural interiors and is influenced by the vibrant colors of my Northern California surroundings.

If painting were a religion, you’d find me lighting candles to the patron saints: Matisse, Diebenkorn, and Hockney.

Amen, and pass the turpentine.

“I have been  presenting Andrew's paintings FOR my art consulting business for years now, and I've been able to place his art on Netflix, Paramount+ and in numerous commercials. His bright colours always catch the eye”

Mairead., Art Consultant

Nick Wilton of Art2Life Academy interviewed me for his “Inspiration” series. It was an honor to sit down with him and talk about where I am and where I’m going.

INTERVIEW with Nicholas Wilton

I am fortunate to work at the ICB, a space in Sausalito, CA, that hosts several talented artists. One of those artists is Nick Wilton, a successful Bay Area Painter and the founder of the Art2Life art program.

He sat down with me to discuss my work and my journey as an artist. Let me know what you think!

TECHNOLOGY AND TRADITION: New tools for creative expression

Unlike my oils on canvas, these limited-edition archival prints are “digitally painted” originals—richly produced on high-quality archival watercolor paper. For my digital paintings, my process often begins with cruddy photos taken on an iPhone that I print out as only as a reference. I then use my digital drawing program (Artrage Deluxe) to make realistic paint strokes and pastels almost indistinguishable from hand-painted work when printed.

This innovative process allows me to push the boundaries of creative expression, resulting in artworks that are a testament to the fluidity and versatility of modern-day art.

Time lapse video of my painting process. For my prints I use ArtRage software and a Wacom tablet to create these digital paintings. This creates what I call a “digital printing place” in high resolution with which I can make high quality limited edition prints.

WORKING WITH OIL, ACRYLIC, AND MIXED MEDIA

For my oil & acrylic/mixed media work, I often use a digital painting that I’ve made and use it as a starting point for a larger piece painted on canvas or wood.

“I believe the results are more important than the tools used to create them. I take enormous inspiration from artists like David Hockney who move fluidly from one medium to another, and embrace digital tools to create the effects he wants.”
